So Long a Letter (1980) by Mariama Ba, set in Senegal in the 1970’s, focuses on the very different choices made by two friends following their husband’s decision to take a second wife. The Awakening (1899) by Kate Chopin, set in late 19th century Louisiana, focuses on a woman who dares to defy a controlling husband.
