His Biblical scenes expressed a new kind of realism, often featuring violent struggles, torture and death, which, combined with dramatic lighting or "tenebrism"- transfixing subjects in shafts of light and shadows, was often shocking, even ugly, but always real and intensely human. This unique artistic combination was revolutionary and had a profound formative influence on painting almost immediately in early Baroque art. Our study will include in detail two of his most famous works: The Calling of Saint Matthew and The Conversion of Saint Paul.
